There are so many options when it comes to flooring! Which are the best for your family and in which locations in your new home? Read on to learn more about floor options and their benefits.

Tile: there are many types of tile with different colors, textures, sizes, and layouts. We often see this flooring in mudrooms, laundry rooms, and bathrooms where water is often tracked in. This flooring is great because it doesn’t absorb moisture like a wood floor does. It’s also very durable and relatively easy to clean.

Solid wood: we often get the question about solid wood floors. There are many options with this type of flooring, and the planks are solid wood. With these, it is easy to sand and refinish if you desire to make a change down the road. You do need to watch the humidity in your home to make sure these planks stay in top condition. Because they are real wood, they will shrink and expand with the moisture in the air.

Engineered wood: this is a great alternative to solid wood floors, and they function the same way. While these have a top layer of the solid wood, underneath typically has another wood in a criss cross pattern for the remainder of the plank. So, what’s special about this type of flooring? Because they are engineered, there are a lot of options in regard to plank widths, sizes, and styles versus a solid wood which may be a little more limited. That being said, depending on the engineered wood, you may still be able to get one sand and refinish out of the plank, whereas a solid wood is a better bet for refinishing. Still, with engineered wood, it is important to keep an eye on the humidity.

Luxury vinyl planking and tile: this is a great alternative to any type of wood flooring, as well as tile! Luxury vinyl comes in planks and can also be laid in tiles with or without grout. They are still a hard surface flooring and are great for wet areas. They are also typically more affordable than wood flooring and are extremely easy to maintain. Humidity is not as much of a factor with luxury vinyl as it is with wood flooring.

Carpet: for those of us that like soft and cozy, carpet is a great option. We often see our clients going with a nylon or a polyester material for carpet. These can be patterned, a low profile, or have more cushiness. You can also opt for thicker and more comfortable carpet pads underneath the carpet for extra cushion. Nylon is a product that typically wears better and won’t show foot traffic as quickly as polyester may. On the flip side, polyester is a littler easier to clean because of the material.

As you can see, there are many options when it comes to flooring. Some clients opt for all hard surfaces throughout, where others prefer carpet in certain locations. No matter your preferences, there are styles, colors, and options for you in every room in your new home!
