Let's Save Some Energy!

We take great pride in building energy efficient homes and reducing the carbon imprint we make on our environment. Depending on the options selected, our homes use 35% to 65% less energy than homes built to the current energy code. Clients are often very interested in selecting options that save money and are better for our world. Read on to learn more about some of the popular energy saving options!

Insulation: Having the option to add more insulation is often a great idea. Especially for homes that we build closer to a lake where there may be big winds during the winter months, we encourage 2”x6” exterior walls. These thicker walls allow more space for insulation whether fiberglass, wet cellulose, or adding Icynene foam to increase the R-value. The R-value is a measurement of how well heat flow is resisted by the material; the higher the value, the better.

Solar paneling: We have done this a handful of times, but it can be financially limiting. Each client is a little different in what is worthwhile, but solar panels can be a great option if you are planning on being in your home for a significant amount of time.

Furnaces and air conditioners: Today, these are quite energy efficient, and we typically see our clients in the 95% efficient range. Many opt for two stage furnaces which offers a more consistent temperature throughout the home, geothermal, which uses the earth’s resources to heat, or other options. Air conditioners also have many efficient features to reduce energy usage.

Programmable thermostats: Most people are in tune with having programmable thermostats in today’s world. This makes our lives so much easier, and it’s also great for our environment. Nest thermostat is a popular option and both Honeywell and Ecobee also have great programmable selections. Along with this, when the weather is nice, opening windows and getting fresh air in the house is not only good for your health, but also saves you money on heating and cooling.

Appliances: These use a lot of energy, and many offerings today are very energy efficient. We often showcase appliances that are Energy Star rated. This means that the appliances have been approved by Energy Star and meet their standards, which they have deemed to save you money and energy in your home.

Tankless water heaters: These on demand water heaters are another great option so that water is not being heated all day long in a tank. Basically, instead of having a hot water heater use energy to heat water all day, these tankless heaters work immediately when you turn a faucet or shower on.

LED lights: These are amazing! They are bright, efficient, and last a very long time. There are bulb options, can light options, and more that you will find throughout the homes we build. Clients opt for this often for all of the reasons listed above.
