Living in Kalamazoo
Living in Kalamazoo
October 22, 2020

Kalamazoo is halfway between Chicago and Detroit! It’s a city that continues to grow and be a great place to live. Now, when we say “Kalamazoo”, it’s really “Greater Kalamazoo”…which means the general area and not necessarily the exact city of Kalamazoo. So bear with us if we step out of the city and talk more generally about the area. Keep reading to see why there’s no place like Kalamazoo.

Entertainment & the arts: Kalamazoo is known to be an artsy place. We have so many events and festivals downtown for music, art shows including Art Hop where local artists can display their work, and theaters downtown as well as through Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College. There are so many options throughout the year, there’s no getting bored in this town!

Restaurants: Who doesn’t love food? Similar to bigger cities, Kalamazoo tends to draw new restaurants to it. Every time we turn around, a new Mexican spot or fast casual joint is under construction and coming soon. If you love trying new foods and exploring the latest and greatest in town, Kalamazoo is a great spot for you.

Beautiful nature trails & parks: Unlike larger cities, we have the wonderful luxury of many wooded areas surrounding us. We have natural trails like Al Sabo Land Preserve and Asylum Lake Preserve but also paved trails nestled in the woods such as Portage Creek Bicentennial Trails and Kalamazoo Valley River Trail. Not to mention the dozens of parks all over town. Whether you are looking for a sand volleyball court, lake views, trails, tennis and pickleball courts, basketball courts, playgrounds, etc., we have a park for every taste.

Work Opportunities: We may not be the biggest city in the state, but we have some big names that help our economical stability. Stryker, Pfizer, Zoetis, higher education including Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo College, and Kalamazoo Valley Community College, as well as the two hospitals in town, Ascension Borgess and Bronson are just some of these great names. These big companies provide many jobs and bring many people to the area allowing our city to continue to grow and be stable.

Small Businesses: The big companies are great, but we also have an entrepreneurial town! Many small to mid-size companies are also providing work positions for many families. Our city is very driven to “support local” as is #trending. Head downtown to see the many shops or take a tour around town to see the many great companies that make Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo.

Great schools & the Kalamazoo Promise: Our schools are really some of the greatest in the country whether in the city of Kalamazoo or in the surrounding areas. One of the most unique offerings is the Kalamazoo Promise for those in district and sending their children to Kalamazoo Public Schools. This is a program created by private donors that offers full college coverage, or is prorated based on the amount of years the child attends Kalamazoo Public Schools. Many in the area have taken advantage of this great opportunity!

You see, there really is Kalamazoo and it’s a wonderful place to live! If you’re thinking of moving or building, maybe this is the place you’d like to be and we welcome you with open arms.
