AVB worked closely with Kalamazoo College to build this innovative Net Zero educational pavilion, equipped with solar tube lighting, solar panels to power the building, and a composting toilet, atop a former landscape waste dump that was swarming with invasive species.
The pavilion features enclosed rooms for the College to use as classroom, research, and storage space and an open-air pavilion for public or educational use.
The eight striking wood columns were harvested by oxen from the Lillian Anderson Arboretum grounds to preserve the natural landscape and to utilize the natural elements of the site
Ecological design features include:
- The pavilion is fully off-grid, with an on-site photovoltaic (solar) array and energy storage system providing all required electricity for lighting, ceiling fans and power outlets.
- A waterless, composting toilet, the first permitted in Kalamazoo County, serves as an educational tool for the environmental education program, using microbes to treat waste.
